Some facts and figures about the Caledonian Shield trophy

Conceived following a suggestion from Lord Elcho in Edinburgh in 1861.
Design of J. Clark Stanton chosen. Commissioned by Mid-Lothian R.A.
A 3ft. diameter bronze shield in a massive carved oak frame.
The bronze includes "Arms throughout the ages" and classical figures of Justice, Peace and War.
The Scottish Crest, a Lion displaying Sceptre and Sword, dominates the frame with a scroll, - In Defence Me God Defend
9ft. 6ft. high x 6ft. wide, it is the largest known by the Guinness Book of Records.
In 1880's more than 400 competed in three stages.
Shield was publically displayed for ensuing year in Winner's home town after a civic reception and the local band playing See The Conquering Hero Comes.
Scotland's premier shooting award, second in importance only to the Queens Prize at Bisley.
Put away 'safely' in 1914 it was 'lost for 43 years' until 1957 where it was found in the roof space of an Edinburgh Drill Hall. Willie McRirick first saw it 43 years after shooting for it in 1914!
The top score handed in in 1883 was fiddled. The culprit was tried, found guilty and sentenced to nine months imprisonment!
